Drawing with the light March 2026

Charcoal drawing can be a lot of fun and this way of drawing is a lot of fun. We use the charcoal for drawing with mass instead of lines. Yes, we will use the side of the charcoal, the tip, the eraser, a stump, brushes, our thumbs, our palms, and anything else we can to make visually exciting tonal drawings.
This kind of drawing is liberating, it’s fun, it’s fast, and it’s freeing from the rigor of linear structural drawing. 

This kind of drawing is in the spirit and traditions of Harvey Dinnerstein, Burt Silverman, and my teacher Irwin Greenberg. 

We will have fun and along the way you will learn how to quickly size up proportions, how to interpret light and dark, and how to bring some joy back into the drawing process.”
